Mind and Matter
1997
The initial brief was to develop a set of building blocks for a thinking person. The final outcome was aimed at architects and engineers where play with the various blocks permits exploration of a kind of 'abstract architecture'. Based on the idea of grid as ordering principle, point, line, plane and volume were also explored. The final solution also included a box to hold the set.
Envisaged as a set of blocks molded from coloured plastic, the individual elements were eventually fabricated from copper. This allowed each type of structural element to have a distinctive pattina applied. Unexpectedly, tactile qualities including the weight and solidity of each piece greatly enhanced the play experience.
